A handheld computer for precision measurement

A mobile handheld device for measurement work, small, light and accurate enough for use in the field.

The team at querdenker engineering has just completed an interesting project: the development of a mobile handheld device for measurement work. Handheld PCs are often used as PDAs, navigation systems, portable measuring instruments or GPS receivers. As a rule they are small and light, do a great deal, and communicate wirelessly.

Our new device contains a number of new hardware and software components. It is built around the Raspberry Pi CM4 as a system-on-module together with a powerful battery pack, and it has a high-resolution 3.5-inch LCD with capacitive touch and gesture control. On the software side it is based on Buildroot and contains Linux core drivers developed specifically for it.

The handheld PC we developed consists of the following hardware and software components:

Hardware

  • Raspberry Pi CM4 as the system-on-module
  • battery operation with a 2S1P lithium-ion pack
  • 5-inch LCD at 480 x 320
  • capacitive touch and gesture control
  • USB OTG
  • customer-specific analogue signal conditioning and digitisation
  • nine-key membrane keypad

Software

  • Buildroot as the base
  • Linux core driver development
  • customer-specific application and interfaces

We are proud to have developed a capable handheld device for a demanding client, and we look forward to further projects with teeth in them.
