Training equipment that guides the patient through the exercise

The task

FREI medical builds medical training equipment for physiotherapy and rehabilitation. The FREI GUIDE training control software was to be rebuilt from the ground up.

All of it was set up afresh: the Linux drivers by way of the board support package, the whole software architecture including the backend services, and the design of the interface. Extensibility got particular attention, so that future requirements would have room.

The solution

The basis is an individually configured Buildroot. The interface was built with the QT framework, and its settings let FREI medical run the FREI GUIDE system on almost all of their own training machines.

On the touch display, large buttons and symbols carry inexperienced users through the programme. Video animations show the device settings needed before training. Through Myfair technology (a chip card or a wristband with an RFID tag) the display recognises the person training and starts their programme. Anyone in a hurry uses the quick start mode.

During training, real-time feedback reports back on how the movement is being performed, in numbers and in quality. Therapists and trainers adjust the parameters at the display at any time, with no paging through menus.

Security and approval

Data transfer, configuration and firmware updates are protected against access and alteration. For approval we ran the software development and the documentation to IEC 62304.
